Essentials to Pack for Your Key West Vacation
Planning a trip to Key West? Here at The Gates Hotel we’ve made a list of items that you may not take into account while packing for your island vacation. Here’s a look at things to pack beyond the obvious.
Water shoes, flip flops, walking shoes
This shoe trio covers all the bases. Key West beaches are on the rocky side. To make the most of your time at the beach, whether it’s snorkeling or just walking along the sand, water shoes bode best in Key West beaches. Water shoes are most useful at Fort Zachary Beach and Dry Tortugas. Flip flops, on the other hand, are perfect if you’re lounging around the pool at The Gates. Also, make sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes for days in Old Town. A light pair of good walking shoes will keep your feet happy. No one likes blisters on vacation.
Beach bag
Sometimes this light accessory is the first to forget while packing for your tropical vacation. We don’t recommend those big bulky beach bags - an eco tote bag or the reusable grocery store bags work perfect, dry quickly and are both compact and light. This is perfect to bring a change of clothes to the beach, sunscreen, or have a place to put your wet bathing suit.
Sunscreen & lip balm
Those who have had a sunburn on the lips know this is no joke. Those with fair skin should be SPF-ready upon arrival, as the sun in Key West can be merciless. Also, cream or lotion will go a long way after a day out in the sun or swimming to moisturize dry skin.
Sun hat & sunglasses
Obvious but sometimes overlooked. A sun hat will serve you on the beach, Duval Street or if you’re out kayaking in the mangroves. Sunglasses will serve you just about every time you walk outside.
If you forget to pack these items on your Key West trip, no worries - The Gates is located in New Town, which has plenty of stores for you to stock up.
