Every Fourth of July weekend, Key West gets together to celebrate the national fruit of the island - the Key Lime. From July 1 - 4, 2017, it’s Key Lime everything - pies, drinks, and even dinners and brunches. That said, here are the Key Lime Festival events that we’re most looking forward to.
We like to drop things here in Key West - shoes, conch shells, and now key lime pies. Kick off the Key Lime Festival this year with the most delicious drop of all - the key lime pie. More surprising is that the goal of the Key Lime Pie Drop is to NOT ruin the pie despite the long fall from the Key West Lighthouse.
Key lime pie lovers, this is your chance to eat your heart out. The Key Lime Pie Hop takes you across the island for a walking tour of the best - and most unique - key lime pies in the Conch Republic. Participating bakeries include the Curry Mansion, the Key West Key Lime Pie Co., Bagatelle, The Rum Distillery, the Conch Republic Seafood Company.
This is one Key Lime Festival event we’re sure to be at. Hosted by The Gates partner Key West Legal Rum, there will be a free sampling of the local distillery’s own key lime rum, created by chef and master distiller Paul Menta. There will also be a tour of the distillery, the first legal distillery on the island, despite Key West’s long history of rum running during the Prohibition.
The Key Lime Festival wouldn’t be complete without the most popular event of all - the Key Lime Pie Eating Contest. Here you can compete for the title of Key Lime Pie Eatin’ World Champion. That award goes to the participant who can eat a 9-inch key lime pie the fastest.
