Where to Swim in Key West

Where to Swim in Key West

November 30th, 2019 | Activities

Bust out the bathing suit and take advantage of the warm climate in Key West! Here are some suggestions for where to swim around the island.

Smathers Beach

This sandy beach near the airport runs half a mile long and never gets too deep. It is a bit of a hike from the Southernmost Point, but well-worth the trip. There’s plenty of free parking spaces along the beach and bathroom facilities are available. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the area with the occasional plane take-off, which is far enough away that it isn’t a bother. 2601 S. Roosevelt Blvd., Key West

Dante’s Restaurant & Pool Bar

Have a few drinks and take a dip in the pool at Dante’s. This restaurant and bar on Harbor Walk has a big pool that’s complete with a waterfall. It’s super laid-back and a refreshing reprieve from the nearby action of Duval Street and Mallory Square. 955 Caroline St., Key West

Higgs Beach

Higgs Beach is located near Smathers Beach and has a large playground that kids love. Higgs is a great place to sunbathe or take a quick dip; the water is so shallow that you can wade out pretty far. A fishing pier and great bathroom facilities are a plus! 1000 Atlantic Blvd., Key West

The Gates Hotel Key West

Guests at The Gates Hotel Key West have the option to wind down and relax at the pool. Order a fresh cocktail from the onsite bar Rum Row, which pours tasty rum that’s distilled locally. If you get hungry, food is available from the nearby food truck, Blind Pig. If you’re one to enjoy a stogie, a nearby cigar lounge is available to guests, with fresh Rodriguez cigars available in the lobby humidor. Live DJ sets are customary every Sunday from 6-9pm. 3824 N. Roosevelt Blvd., Key West

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Swimming is an option at Zachary Taylor State Park, so bring along a swimming suit if you’re heading out that way. The beach is rocky, and swimming shoes are a must. The beach at Fort Zach is most popular for snorkeling - you can rent the proper gear at the park’s Chickee Hut. 601 Howard England Way, Key West

The Gates Hotel is a Condé Nast award-winning hotel located in New Town, which offers free hourly shuttle service to Old Town.
